RACE OF CHAMPIONS DART ASPHALT MODIFIED TOUR 2008 STEEL HEAD MOTOR RULES COMPLETED. TEAMS EXCITED ABOUT ECONOMIC MOTOR OPTION FOR 2008.
BINGHAMTON, NY…The Race of Champions Dart Asphalt Modified Tour staff has completed work on the 2008 steel headed motor package option for the tour this upcoming season. The new motor package will compliment the existing aluminum head motor program that had been in existence. The new motor will be an option along with the existing rules that were in place in 2007.
The new steel head motor program will give teams the opportunity to utilize a combination of new and old pieces to put together a motor that suites their own budget. A complete brand new steel headed motor based on the ’08 rules is expected to come in under $20,000. The new package, although not a bargain basement price, will put together a strong package this will provide teams with enough horsepower to compete up front. That cost would include a complete package from a new block up.
RoC Tour Director Andrew Harpell commented, “We would love to have a $10,000 motor that would compete with the current aluminum head package but that wasn’t realistic.” He added, “A team can go to the majority of engine builders we have spoken to and have this motor built complete with new pieces for under $20,000.” “Teams that have the ability to do their own machining will be able to come in well under that figure.”
Many of the Modified tour motors escalated dramatically in cost over the last several years. The new package will come in for almost half of what many current teams have built in the past few seasons while still being very competitive and reliable. The old steel headed motor program revitalized northeast asphalt Modified racing in the mid 1990’s and this new package is certainly expected to create a lot of interest.
Harpell remarked, “We listened to the teams and motor builders when putting the package together. At the Parts Peddler Trade Show in November we were overwhelmed with the number of teams looking to pursue this option.” “No less than five motor builders were involved in the process with valuable input coming from them all.” “Lastly he said, “Each of those engine builders involved are excited to have an opportunity to build one of these motors for 2008,”
This past season the Race of Champions teamed up with Dart Machinery to award a set of the new heads at each of the RoC tour races. Those certificates have been mailed so that teams can now redeem them through their own motor builder. The new motor does incorporate a Dart head and Dart block while still allowing some other options as well.
Next up will be the season ending awards banquet for the Race of Champions Asphalt Modified Tour teams. That will take place on Saturday, January 5th at the Binghamton Regency Hotel and Conference Center. Tentative schedule dates are expected to be revealed at that time.
