SUNOCO RACE OF CHAMPIONS WEEKEND SEPTEMBER 14, 15 AND 16 AT OSWEGO SPEEDWAY.  LATE MODEL 50 TO PAY THE WINNER MINIMUM $2,500 THAT TOTAL COULD JUMP TO $4,500 FOR A MAARA LATE MODEL COMPETITOR.

OSWEGO, NYThe 56th running of the Sunoco Race of Champions at Oswego Speedway is quickly approaching on the dates of September 14th, 15th and 16th.  Although the Modified 200 is the traditional highlight of the weekend great racing is expected over the three days of racing action.  The Late Model 50 scheduled for Saturday will see the winner earning a minimal of $2,500 with bonus money now available on top of that which could raise the winners share to $4,500.

The Late Model 50 is always an exciting event during the Sunoco Race of Champions Weekend and this year should be no different.  Last year Todd Hoddick put on a great display in winning the 50 lap showdown.  The number of pre-race entries for this year’s race is at the highest since the event moved to Oswego Speedway.

In addition to the base winners share of $2,500 a bonus has been put into place for Mid-Atlantic Auto Racing Alliance (MAARA) drivers that are in competition.  If a MAARA driver should win the 50 lap race they will receive a $2,000 bonus raising the winners share to $4,500.  If a MAARA driver does not win the event the highest finishing MAARA Series driver will earn a $1,000 bonus.  In addition, if a MAARA driver does not win the event, the second and third highest finishing MAARA drivers will earn a $500 bonus each.

In order for a driver to be considered a “MAARA competitor” they simply had to compete in one previous MAARA series event in 2006.  Currently, seventy-one drivers have competed in the first three MAARA Series events in 2006.  All of those drivers would be eligible for this bonus money.  This bonus includes only the first three series events that have been held to date.

“The Late Model race is always a thriller at Oswego for the Race of Champions Weekend,” commented Race of Champions owner Andrew Harpell.   “I’m always impressed by not just the appearance of the Late Models but the quality of the field, we expect this year to be no different.”

The available bonus money has been put forth by an anonymous sponsor that is a big supporter of Northeast Late Model racing.  With regard to the bonus Harpell remarked, “We appreciate this gentleman stepping up as a long time supporter of the Late Model class, they just wanted to provide the MAARA and Western, NY teams an extra incentive for this event – we are happy to offer it to the teams.”

The Sunoco Race of Champions Weekend gets underway on Thursday, September 14th with an open practice session between 1 and 5 p.m.  After that the racing will get underway with inner-loop racing with the Mini Stocks, Legends Cars and a Four Cylinder Enduro.  This will mark the first ever night time race in the inner-loop at Oswego Speedway.   Special lights are being brought in for the inner loop for this event.  The night racing program goes green at 7:30 p.m.
